New rule on Gili Air, “NO MORE DUMPING RUBBISH IN LANDFILLS ON THE ISLAND”
On the 14th of August 2014 a meeting was held on Gili Air at the Kantor Desa (Village Head Office), attended by the Kepala Desa (Head of the Village), Gili Cares members, local elders, and some of the business owners or managers, discussing the rubbish problem on Gili Air and finding a solution.
During the meeting the Kepala Desa set new rules on waste management and implemented a new system transporting all rubbish from Gili Air to Lombok.
New waste management system and rules:
- Dumping rubbish in landfills on Gili Air is no longer allowed, and there will be penalties for breaking that rule.
- The trash will be collected by cidomos (horse cart) in the morning, taken to the harbor, shipped to Lombok and their collected by rubbish trucks supplied by the Government of Lombok.
- The waste needs to be separated in three bags, “organic”, “paper & plastic”, and “glass & metal”
Soon the Kepala Desa will meet with all businesses and companies on Gili Air to introduce the new system. And there are plans to provide rubbish bins around to make the collecting process easier.
