We encourage people to go green on the Gilis, whether it’s with our local community living here on these beautiful islands, or passerby travellers wanting to visit this paradise, we call home.

It’s impressive the initiatives and programs that have been created and implemented on the Gili Islands in the last few years, to ensure we always keep these magical islands clean and green! We have listed here below a couple important initiatives and programs that are currently making a difference now.

Refill Your Bottle

Save plastic while visiting or living on the Gili Islands! Rather than buying plastic water bottles, you can refill your reusable water bottle at different restaurants and bars on all islands; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. You can download the app Refill My Bottle. It will show you a map view of the different places that allow you to refill your reusable water bottle for free or for a small fee of 5,000 to 10,000 IDR.

Take a look at this video below describing how you can become a refiller and start saving our beautiful planet today with Refill my Bottle.

Join a beach clean-up

Did you know that Indonesia is the second-largest contributor to marine plastic pollution after China? Trash has a huge impact on our marine ecosystem, it’s dangerous for the underwater sea animals and plastic kills 100,000 marine animals and 1 million marine birds every year, they think the plastic is food, ie. jellyfish.

Beach Clean Up Organized By The Gili Shark Conservation Project

There are several beach cleanups around the Gili islands! All you need to do is show-up and start collecting trash. The few that we have recurring every week on each island are:
Gili Air

Gili Trawangan

  • Gili Eco Trust, they post about the events every week so just follow their Facebook page! Location differs, but it’s 5-6pm every friday.

Gili Meno

  • Trash Hero – Sunday 2 PM you can get in touch with them on their Facebook page!
